Prior to going through these breeds one by one, let’s briefly talk about how dogs’ coats are colored.

Black and white dogs

For dogs with more than one color in their coats, there is no limit to the combinations of colors.

However, despite the great diversity, dogs’ coats are only colored by two pigments.

It is quite a complicated subject that I am simplifying.

A black pigment called eumelanin, and a red pigment called phaeomelanin.

The greater the amount of melanin in a pigment, the darker the result- imagine a Newfoundland dog that is jet black or a Red Setter that is dark red.

Each pigment contains different amounts of melanin caused by different genes.

Accordingly, eumelanin can appear black, blue, or grey depending on the genes involved.

Genes determine whether pheomelanin appears as a bright red color or as a tan color.

It is white when there is no pigment added to the dog’s hair.

Thus, black and white dogs have coats made up of individual hairs that contain a mixture of eumelanin (which has not been modified by any genes) and hair without any pigment whatsoever.

I will now go through my list of the reasons why dogs have black and white coats now that I have explained how they get these coats.

Boston Terrier

Anyone in need of a bit of excitement in their life will enjoy the company of a Boston Terrier. Over a century ago, the Boston Terrier was bred as a fighting dog, but now they are characterized by their curiosity and kindness. They have a distinct ‘tuxedo’ coating consisting of black and white patches. As a result of these markings, the Boston Terrier is known as the ‘American Gentleman’.

While the Boston Terrier’s black and white ‘tuxedo’ markings are usually black and white, they can also be seal and white (seal refers to brown color). Additionally, they can be brindle or white (brindle being a spotted coat).

Its small size and compact size make the Boston Terrier an ideal city dog. Their height is 15 – 17 inches and their weight is 12 – 25 pounds. The lifespan of this little furry companion is approximately 11 – 13 years. Puppies of this size require plenty of exercises! They will become your best friends if you give them lots of time to play.

Japanese Chin

In addition to being charming and loving, the Japanese Chin is also known for its aristocratic disposition. They were popular among the ancient Japanese royalty. Their floppy ears, squashed faces, and silly behavior make the Japanese Chin a great companion. As it only requires about 20 minutes of exercise per day, it is a great pet for the city or indoors.

As a result of British breeders crossing Japanese Chins with King Charles Spaniels, Japanese Chins became popular. In addition to black and white, the Japanese Chin’s black can also come in red, lemon, orange, sable, black and white with tan points, or even brindle.

Chins typically weigh between 4 and 12 pounds and have a height from 8 to 11 inches. Their lifespan ranges between 10 and 12 years.

Tibetan Terrier

Tibetan Terriers have a long history of serving as loyal and sensitive guard dogs for ancient Buddhist monasteries. Today, these dogs are considered extremely affectionate, sensitive, and intelligent. These dogs are perfect for teaching tricks!

Dogs of this breed have a beautiful, shiny double coat that hangs down their bodies. They were bred to have “show shoe” feet in order to navigate the snowy, mountainous terrain in Tibet. As a result of their origins as mountain dogs, they are also very energetic and love walking.

Among the small breeds of medium-sized dogs, Tibetan Terriers are among the most popular. They should grow between 14 and 17 inches tall and weigh 18 to 30 pounds. With an average life expectancy of 15 – 16 years, Tibetan Terriers are also among the longest living dogs.

The mini will, however, stand only 10 – 14 inches tall in comparison to the Bull Terrier’s 22 inches. Due to their muscular nature, Miniature Bull Terriers will also weigh 18 – 28 pounds. An upbeat and friendly tiny dog breed is then called the Then. It gets its name from its large, wing-shaped ears, which give it the meaning of butterfly. The coat of a papillon is long, elegant, and causes less tangling than that of other breeds. Dogs love to sit in their owners’ laps just as much as they love to exercise, so pay attention to them and take them for walks often.

Do not be fooled by their delicate nature, as Papillons are very adaptive dogs. Both city apartments and large country estates can be home to papillons. Since they are small, they are easy to transport and can easily fit into an airplane carrier. This way, you won’t have to worry about your dog getting stuck in the cargo hold.

Papillons are small dogs that are often classified as lap dogs, as described above. Males and females will weigh between 9 and 10 pounds, and they will be no taller than 10 inches. Their lifespan ranges between 12 and 15 years.
